2023.05.30 19:46 Bassalot Ancient Kingdom and ancient Greece

The ancient Kingdom is/will mainly have something to do with ancient Greece.
Hear me out :D
I have long wondered why there is no nation directly referencing ancient Greece in One Piece. After all we have seen islands in One Piece representing different nations (France, Japan etc.). I also have to admit that, as a Greek myself, I felt a little left out (in a fun ODA SENPAI NOTICE ME PLEASE kinda way, not in the nationalist GREECE IS BETTER THAN EVERYONE AND YOU SHOULD INCLUDE IT IN YOUR STORIES way).
Lately there has been a series of clues that I believe directly connect our story with this idea. I have some serious evidence and some less serious speculation. I will start off with the less serious speculation.
Oda is a history nerd. We have seen him naming characters with real pirate names and (as I said above) representing different real nations with the way he draws the different countries. So, for a history nerd like him, I truly believe that at some point he will also draw an island/nation that will directly represent ancient Greece. That nation will be the ancient Kingdom.
I also think (and please correct me if I am wrong) that the Japanese have a love for Greece and especially ancient Greece? I am not very sure about this, it is just some WILD speculation. My Japanese friends, help me out here (much love, thank you for giving us Oda, Kurosawa and tentacle hentai)
Now for some serious evidence.
  1. You remember the giant metal robot that Vegapunk has hidden in his laboratory? The one that attacked Mariejois? Well, in ancient Greek mythology, and you better believe that (I will leave the wikipedeia article here), there is a myth about a GIANT ROBOT (automaton) made of copper! Yep. His name was Tallos. We were taught about ancient Greek mythology in school and his name popped out once or twice.
In Greek mythology, Talos — also spelled Talus (/ˈteɪlɒs/;[1] Greek: Τάλως, Tálōs) or Talon (/ˈteɪlɒn, ən/; Greek: Τάλων, Tálōn) — was a giant automaton made of bronze to protect Europa in Crete from pirates and invaders. He circled the island's shores three times daily.
As you can see the most popular myth has him guarding Crete (an island in Greece).
Now what I did not know and learnt while reading this article is that Talos:
In the Cretan dialect, talôs was the equivalent of the Greek hêlios, the Sun: The lexicon of Hesychius of Alexandria notes simply "Talos is the Sun".[8]:126
Talos is the sun in the Cretan dialect.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talos
This last piece of information blew my mind and for me is vital. The ancient robot that guarded an island is the sun. So I believe that the robot in Vegapunk’s laboratory used to guard the ancient kingdom. At some point it attacked the land of the gods, perhaps when the ancient Kingdom tried to defend itself from its enemies. Additionally, the connection with the sun ties even more with the One-Piece story. Perhaps Joy Boy as the sun god ordered the robot, under his command (?) to attack Mariejois?
  1. A second point is that since the name of one of the Five Elders dropped ( Saint Jay Garcia Saturn), Ohara in one of his videos ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q83KS-IZu-U I think this is the one) hypothesized that the war between the ancient Kingdom and the World Government 800 years ago reminds the war between Rome and the various Greek states (mainly during the 3rd 2nd and 1st century BC). He said that, based on the hypothetical names of the rest of the Five Elders (which will be the Roman gods) and the name of the ancient Greek gods, as seen in the ancient weapons (Pluton, Poseidon, Uranus). In Greek mythology, Uranus (/ˈjʊərənəs/ YOOR-ə-nəs, also /jʊˈreɪnəs/ yoo-RAY-nəs),[3] sometimes written Ouranos (Ancient Greek: Οὐρανός, lit. 'sky', [uːranós]), is the personification of the sky and one of the Greek primordial deities
Just to be clear here, the Romans gave Latin names to the Greek gods and changed or added to their stories. This was common practice in the Roman Empire, and everyone was happy, no one had a problem. But here we are basing this theory on a distinction among almost identical things. So, war between Roman-World Government Gods and Greek-ancient Kingdom Gods.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uranus_(mythology)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman%E2%80%93Greek_wars
Now this is my main theory. I also have to add here that Shanks sword being named Gryphon can also be used to support my theory. I thought Gryphons were Greek mythical animals BUT in Wikipedia you can see that Gryphons are also Mesopotamian mythical animals.
The griffin, griffon, or gryphon (Ancient Greek: γρύψ, gryps; Classical Latin: grȳps or grȳpus;[1] Late and Medieval Latin:[2] gryphes, grypho etc.; Old French: griffon) is a legendary creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion; the head and wings of an eagle; and sometimes an eagle's talons as its front feet.
So perhaps I am wrong here.
But the interesting thing is that Gryphons «Since classical antiquity, griffins were known for guarding treasures and priceless possessions.»
Sooooo, Shanks has a sword with the name of a mythical creature that is known for guarding treasures… I believe this little sub-theory is another proof that Shanks has a huge secret.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griffin
So my friends. For me the ancient kingdom is/will mainly have something to do with ancient Greece. Feel free to comment, discuss and correct me if I am wrong somewhere. I hope you find this theory interesting.
I also hope I did not steal someone else’s idea without knowing. I thought about these connections alone and I have not read or heard anything about it from someone else (mainly about the Tallos theory). Of course, the Graeco-Roman wars idea, came to my head after watching Ohara’s video. So I am hoping I did not accidentally steal someone’s idea. For me this original content. If by any chance I stole someone’s idea I am really sorry and I will delete this article.
Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful life! :D

2023.05.30 19:46 SerpentineJulia [M4A] [F4A] Your Partner Comforts You During Allergy Season [Established Relationship] [Caring Speaker] [Sick Listener] [A Little Flirty] [Comfort] [Sweet] [Wholesome] [Kisses]

Summary: It’s that time of the year again. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, everything is blooming… and you’re out there, dying from hay fever. Today has been particularly awful because your job required you to be outdoors for several hours. After returning home, you’re a sneezing, itchy mess. Thankfully, your doting and caring partner is there to take care of you. They’ll do anything to make you feel better, even if it means going out to buy the entire stock of tissues at the grocery store.
*****
Key:
(Words in parenthesis): Sound effects
[Words in brackets]: The Speaker’s actions
“Words in quotation marks”: The Speaker’s lines
Words in italics: Scene change
*****
General Notes: This was a silly idea I had while working on my lengthier, more challenging projects. The inspiration for this one, unfortunately, comes from my current battle with seasonal allergies, haha. As a side note, in the script, I use the term, “Gesundheit” in place of “Bless you” after the Listener sneezes. For anyone who doesn’t know, the word means, “health”, or in this context, “good health.” I actually say, “Gesundheit” in real life, so I decided to write that in.
Notes on Usage: You may record this script for an audio, but I do need to be credited. I would very much like to listen to it, so please send me a link so I can follow up. Certain types of monetization are fine (like YouTube), but please do not paywall this or any of my scripts. As for the script itself, you may edit the genders and you may change the title to “Your Boyfriend or Girlfriend” if you would like to. Please keep the rest of the writing the same, however. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a message. Thank you!
*****
Setting: The Speaker and the Listener’s home
(The front door opens and closes. Footsteps approach.)
“Welcome home, sweetheart! How was your…”
[Interrupted pause to take in the Listener’s appearance]
“…Your eyes are red, and so is your nose. You look like you’ve been crying. Did something happen at work that’s made you upset?”
[Pause]
“…Nothing bad happened?”
[Pause]
“I’m glad to hear there wasn’t a work catastrophe. That still doesn’t explain why it looks like you’ve had a rough day. You do know that if anything is bothering you, you can always come to me, right? Whatever it is, I’ll listen and help you through it. I promise.”
(A sneeze, coming from the Listener.)
“Gesundheit! Here, let me grab you a tissue…”
(A tissue is pulled from a box.)
“You’re welcome, sweetheart. Wait a minute…”
[Pause as the realization sinks in]
“It’s your allergies, isn’t it? They’re acting up today.”
[Pause]
“Why didn’t you just say that from the beginning?”
[Pause]
It is a big deal. Allergies are nothing to downplay. I can tell you’re struggling, even though you’re putting on a brave face. This time of year is always difficult for you, but you seem more affected than usual. Did you spend a lot of time outside today?”
[Pause]
“You were out there for most of the morning and afternoon?”
[Pause]
“I’m so sorry. That must have been really exhausting and uncomfortable. Come here.”
[Pause for a hug and a gentle kiss]
“You’re home now, so you’re safe from all those nasty, harmful things outside. I’m here, sweetheart. I’m right here, and I’ll take care of you.”
[Pause]
“You don’t have to thank me. I’m always happy to take care of you. Now, for the first order of business, let’s get you out of these work clothes…”
[Pause]
“Oh, stop smirking at me. I didn’t mean it like that!”
[Pause to chuckle]
“You have such a dirty mind.”
[Pause]
“You’re right – I do love it. But, that’s beside the point.”
[Pause]
“Aww, don’t pout. We’ll have plenty of time for that later. Right now, I have to make sure you’re not going to die from your allergies.”
[Pause]
“You can give me your bedroom eyes all you want, but I’m still not going to change my mind. Let’s get you feeling better, and then you can have your wicked way with me, okay?”
[Pause]
“Good. As I was saying…you should remove your clothes because they probably have a lot of allergens on them.”
[Pause]
“Yes, you could put your pajamas on, but how about I draw you a bath first? That way, you can stretch out and relax for a while. After the day you’ve had, it sounds like you could use something to loosen and soothe your muscles.”
[Pause]
“Mhhm, I’d love to join you, but I have to run out to get a few items.”
[Pause]
“You want to know what we could possibly need?”
[Pause]
“Well, we’re going to need more tissues since we’re down to our last box. I also noticed that you finished your bottle of eyedrops last night, so I’ll replace that with a new one. Speaking of things that you've been doing at night, you’ve been drinking more of your ginger tea. At first, I wasn’t sure why, but now that I think about it, the tea probably helps to alleviate some of the symptoms, at least enough for you to sleep. I’ll stock up on that as well. And to be completely honest, I’m not sure how effective your current allergy med is. It hardly seems like it’s touching your allergies. I know how annoying it can be to change meds, but it might be time to try something new. I’ll pick up a couple of options, so you can see which one works for you.”
[Pause]
“…What’s with the look?”
[Pause]
“No, you’re definitely giving me a look. And I can’t decipher it. You have this adorable, little smile on your lips, but your eyebrows are furrowed, like you’re trying to figure something out. Was it what I said? Did it any of it weird you out?”
[Pause]
“No? Then, what is it? What’s going on in that beautiful head of yours?”
[Pause]
“You’re…surprised that anyone would care enough to pay attention to the little things about you.”
[Pause]
“I do care. Very much so. As your partner, I’m supposed to know you, and that means learning and understanding your likes, dislikes, the subtleties in your behavior, and your quirks.”
[Pause]
“Thank you for saying that, but I’m the lucky one here.”
[Pause to kiss]
“Give me a couple of minutes and I’ll have that bath ready for you.”
(The sound of retreating footsteps. The water begins running in the bathroom. A flicker of a lighter to light some candles.)
“Sweetheart! You can come in now.”
[Pause to groan]
“You just had to wear your silk robe, didn’t you? You know what that does to me.”
[Pause to sigh]
“Exactly. You’re making it very difficult for me to concentrate.”
[Pause]
“Yes, really. And stop biting your lip like that. Your seduction tactics aren’t going to work on me. Not this time.”
[Pause]
“On the contrary, I find you extremely attractive right now, even with your sniffly nose and bloodshot eyes.”
[Pause]
“I’m not joking. You’re always gorgeous.”
[Pause]
“Of course I mean it.”
[Pause]
“We’re getting off-topic again. You’re here for a reason, and that is to take a nice, long soak. I just tested the temperature of the water, so it should still be hot. If you're not too congested, you should notice the scent in the water. It's from your favorite bubble bath - the lavender and mint one. And in case you’d like to do something while you’re relaxing, I left the novel you’re currently reading on the bathroom counter, along with a mug of your ginger tea and a plate of those shortbread cookies you like so much. Last, but certainly not least, I lit candles to add to the overall ambiance.”
[Pause]
“I’m glad you think it looks like paradise in here. Hopefully, it feels that way, too.”
[Pause to chuckle]
“I’m perfectly aware that I could join you and find out if this really feels like paradise, but I should get going. Don’t worry, I won’t be gone for too long.”
[Pause]
“Yes, I can handle dinner tonight. You didn’t even have to ask – I was planning on it anyway. Would you like me to cook something, or would you like to order takeout?”
[Pause]
“You’d like soup from the bistro around the corner?”
[Pause]
“Yeah, I can stop by after I visit the store. It’s no problem at all.”
[Pause to chuckle]
“Yes, I know which soup to order. You’ll also want the French baguette, rather than the oyster crackers.”
[Pause]
“Like I said, I know you. Your food preferences were one of the first things I learned about you, actually. Now, enjoy your bath, sweetheart. I’ll see you soon.”
[Pause to kiss]
(The sound of footsteps retreating. A car engine begins.)
A little while later, the Speaker arrives home, juggling what appears to be a massive number of bags.
(The front door opens and closes gently. The rustling of bags as they are set down.)
“Hey, sweetheart. What are you doing out here in the living room? I thought you’d be in the bathtub for a while longer.”
[Pause to chuckle]
“Okay, that is a valid excuse to leave. I don’t like it when my skin starts to prune, either.”
(The sound of the Listener going through the bags.)
“Oh, these? Um…I might have gotten a little carried away when I was at the store. In my defense, I wanted to make sure you had everything you could possibly want or need!”
[Pause to chuckle]
“Yes, it was absolutely necessary to buy out the entire stock of tissues. It wasn’t like they had that many anyway. It was just a few dozen.”
[Pause]
“C’mon, 48 boxes isn’t that bad.”
[Pause]
“All right, fine. It is a bit…much. The cashier was having a field day, though. He kept laughing at me, saying this was like The Great Toilet Paper Hoarding of 2020.”
[Pause]
“Stop laughing! I only did what I thought was best.”
[Pause]
“Yes, I know I’m ridiculous. Hey, you asked me out first, and you’re still dating me, three years later. So, really, who’s the ridiculous one here?”
[Pause to chuckle]
“Still me? That’s what I thought you’d say.”
[Slightly longer pause]
“How are you feeling? Did the bath help?”
[Pause]
“Good, I’m glad. You do look much more at ease than when you first arrived home. Your eyes are still red, though. Are they itchy at all?”
[Pause]
“A bit? Hmm, now is probably a good time to put some eye drops in. I purchased the same brand that you normally use.”
(Rustling of a bag as the Speaker reaches into it.)
“Here it is.”
[Pause]
“You look like you’re about to ask me something, but you’re hesitating. What is it, sweetheart?”
[Pause]
“You’d like me to help you with the eye drops?”
[Pause]
“Sure, I can do that. Just let me put these items away first, and then I’ll give you my undivided attention. Which spot is more comfortable for you to do this? The couch or the bedroom?”
[Pause]
“The couch? That works. Oh, I have your soup, too. Would you like that after the eye drops or later tonight?”
[Pause]
“Later it is then. I’ll keep it in the fridge for now.”
(Cabinets open and close.)
(Soft footsteps as the Speaker comes back into the living and sits on the couch.)
“Everything is all set. I’m ready to…”
(The Listener sneezes again.)
“Gesundheit!”
(Another tissue is pulled from the box.)
“Here’s another tissue.”
[Pause]
“Sweetheart, you are not a gross mess. I told you, you’re always beautiful.”
[Pause]
“Yes, you’re beautiful, even when you’re sneezing up a storm and blowing your nose. Only you could make any of that even remotely cute.”
[Pause to chuckle]
“Do you feel okay enough to lie down, so I can put the drops in?”
[Pause]
“Good. Here, place your head in my lap.”
[Pause]
“There you go. Are you comfortable?”
[Pause]
“Good. On the count of three, I’ll place two drops in the right eye, okay?”
[Pause]
“One…two…three.”
[Pause]
“I’m sorry. I know it stings, sweetheart. It’ll be over soon, I promise. Take a deep breath for me.”
(Sounds of breathing.)
“Are you all right?”
[Pause]
“Good. Are you ready for the other eye?”
[Pause]
“Okay, I’ll count to three again.”
[Pause]
“One…two…three.”
[Pause]
“You did a great job with that one. You hardly reacted at all.”
[Pause]
“Can you open your eyes so I can see if the redness has improved?”
[Pause]
“They’re looking much better now. Do they still itch?”
[Pause]
“No? That’s good. I’m relieved to hear that.”
[Pause]
“Sure, you can close your eyes. Relax, sweetheart. We can stay here for as long as you’d like to. There’s nowhere else I need to be, nor is there anything else I have to do. This time is all yours.”
[Pause]
“You like the sound of that? Mhhm, me too.”
[Pause]
“Would it be all right if I ran my fingers through your hair? It’s comforting for me, and I think it is for you, too.”
[Pause]
“Thank you.”
(Sounds of the Speaker’s fingers running through the Listener’s hair – light scratching.)
“How does that feel?”
[Pause]
“Like you’re on cloud nine? Hmm, that is a big compliment.”
[Pause to sigh, dreamily]
“Your hair is so soft and silky. I can’t get over how amazing it feels between my fingers.”
[Pause to chuckle]
“Yes, that’s why I make up every excuse to touch it. I especially love it when you first wake up and roll over. You always have a strand of hair that falls across your forehead, and I tuck it behind your ear each morning.”
[Pause]
“Mhmm, that is a part of our morning routine, you’re right. Well, that and the ton of kisses that follow it.”
[Pause]
“I love every part of our routine, sweetheart. Even the part where you throw me out of bed because I’ve made us late for work…again.”
[Pause to chuckle]
“Speaking of things we usually do every day, tell me about your day. How was work?”
[Pause]
“Wait, that’s why you were outdoors for so long?”
[Pause]
“Your boss thought it was a great day for team building, so you had to travel by foot to complete a scavenger hunt around town?”
[Pause to chuckle in disbelief]
“Wow, and I thought my workplace was strange. The last time we tried team building, someone got punched, and that was a whole HR nightmare. Do you remember the Escape Room Incident last fall?”
[Pause]
“Yeah, that’s the one. We’re still dealing with the repercussions from that. Anyway, did you have fun doing the scavenger hunt, at least?”
[Pause]
“That’s good. It sounds like your sneezing and itchy eyes weren’t completely in vain then. Still, I’m sorry your allergies made things more difficult today. Hopefully, switching to a new med will help. There are two kinds that you haven’t tried yet, so I bought both. They’re in the medicine cabinet now.”
[Pause]
“What do you mean you’ll really get a chance to put a new med to the test? Will you be outside for another extended period of time?”
[Pause]
“You have a team building exercise on Friday? What is it this time?”
[Pause to chuckle in disbelief]
“Kickball, really?”
[Pause]
“Okay, your company takes the cake for being the weirdest. Although… if I’m being honest, it’s probably the most enjoyable as well.”
[Pause]
“Oh, the game is open to the employees’ spouses and partners? Do you mean as spectators or players?”
[Pause]
“I see. They're allowed to be players. That is pretty cool. You know, you’re doing that thing where you’re trying to be coy, but I can see right through it. This your way of asking if I’ll play, isn’t it?”
[Pause]
“I’d love to. But, wait… if this is a team-building exercise, then wouldn’t you be with your coworkers? That would mean… all the spouses and partners would be on the same team. So…we’d be competing against each other.”
[Pause]
“No, I’m not scared! Far from it. You’re the one who should be afraid. I’m going to destroy you at kickball. Just you wait.”
[Pause]
“Mhhm, wanna bet on it?”
[Pause]
“Yeah? If that’s what you want, then I’d be stupid to refuse. And what do I get if I win?”
[Pause to chuckle]
“Oh, I’ll definitely agree to those terms.”
[Slightly longer pause]
“You’re starting to look sleepy, sweetheart. Today has taken a toll on you, so you’re probably ready for a well-deserved nap. We’ll come back to this conversation, all right? For now, just rest. I’ve got you.”
[Pause]
“I’m sure. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be. Sleep well, sweetheart. I love you.”
[Pause to kiss gently]

2023.05.30 19:45 ShipHistorian GREENLIGHT: a discussion

Mattel please forgive me if this post doesn’t suit you, and delete at your discretion if needed. Has anyone else noticed a surprising lack of quality construction in Greenlight models? I open them straight out of the box and parts are already falling off, or wheels come misaligned, or pieces break quite easily. Is this common with all higher end diecast? An example is when I brush my tractor I recently bought with my hand and the exhaust came off! I just wanted to hear from an active community of collectors. Again, forgive me if this post is not suited to the sub, I just wanted to ask around.

Allow me to outline the compelling reasons for embracing this opportunity.
  1. Expanding Revenue Streams: By entering the content creation space, GameStop can tap into additional revenue streams beyond traditional retail sales. This diversification reduces reliance on third-party game publishers and strengthens GameStop's financial position.
  2. GameStop Pro Subscription Transformation: The GameStop Pro subscription service, currently focused on discounts and perks, can undergo a transformative expansion into an exclusive content platform. By adopting a business model akin to Netflix, GameStop can offer subscribers access to a library of high-quality, GameStop-published games. This would drive higher subscription rates and recurring revenue while enhancing customer loyalty and engagement.
  3. Strengthening the GameStop Brand: Establishing GameStop as a game publisher would elevate its brand image and unlock new possibilities for partnerships, collaborations, and cross-promotion. GameStop could leverage its existing relationships with developers, publishers, and gaming influencers to create exclusive titles, leveraging their expertise while gaining wider recognition as a creator of exceptional gaming experiences.
  4. Leveraging Customer Data: Through its Pro subscription service, GameStop possesses a wealth of customer data. By entering the content creation business, GameStop can leverage this valuable asset to drive data-informed decision-making, improve game development, and tailor experiences to suit customer preferences. This data-driven approach will ensure a competitive edge in an increasingly personalized gaming landscape.
  5. Capitalizing on Gaming Trends: The global gaming industry continues to grow exponentially, with content creation at its core. As technology advances and streaming becomes the norm, the demand for engaging gaming experiences will skyrocket. By embracing this trend and leveraging GameStop's expertise in gaming retail, the company can seize a lucrative market opportunity and become a key player in the content creation space.
Gentlemen, the time has come for GameStop to harness its untapped potential and become a game publisher. By offering exclusive titles to GameStop Pro subscribers, GameStop can revolutionize the gaming industry and secure its position as a leading content creator. This strategic move will bolster revenue, solidify customer loyalty, and ensure GameStop's continued success in a rapidly evolving market.
Let us embrace this transformative journey together and lead GameStop into a future where it not only thrives as a retailer but also shines as a prominent force in content creation. I eagerly await the opportunity to discuss this vision in further detail and explore the possibilities it holds for GameStop's future.
Yours sincerely,

2023.05.30 19:44 mort323 How far up can FD actually upgrade you?

I hear back and forth about if tipping the FD upon check-in can result in a significant upgrade, especially in tourist destinations (florida, vegas, etc). There's always someone saying how they got a bomb upgrade from a standard reservation to like a multi-room suite on the top floor by tipping the FD $50, and then another person saying such a big upgrade like that isn't possible without the FD getting in trouble/drawing attention since the cost difference is too much and the software won't let them reassign to a room like that so easily.
So, how far up can the FD actually upgrade someone on the spot at a property that has different room types with a large cost difference? Especially if the person doesn't have status with the brand?
Btw, thanks so much everyone who replied to my last question. It made me feel much better about speaking up as needed.

2023.05.30 19:43 dreamingofislay Feis Ile 2023 Day Four - Laphroaig Day Recap (5/30)

Feis Ile 2023 Day Four - Laphroaig Day Recap (5/30)
The week rolls on, and so do we! Laphroaig is my favorite distillery, so it's a real treat to be back. Heaven on earth.
The sun shines on Laphroaig and Caledonia
  • The swag is strong with this one. Although other distilleries have scaled back the free items, Laphroaig gave out the same array of goodies as they did in 2018: an aluminum water bottle, lanyard, and a mini-glencairn glass. Very generous, and it's so much nicer to drink single malt scotch out of proper glassware instead of the flimsy paper cups of Lagavulin and Caol Ila (pro tip: bring your own glass to those days).
  • There was a lot to see and do, with the main attraction being the rotating cast of musical performers, who kept it fun and lively. There also were a set of stalls from local crafts stores (in essence, a small flea market), plenty of food, and lawn games like cornhole and quoits. We bought a small book written and illustrated by a local that collects the Flora of Laphroaig.
  • The drinks setup changed a lot compared to past open days. This year, everyone got a free dram of Cairdeas 2023, a white port and madeira cask marriage. After that, it was a strictly cash-bar system. The selection was Select, 10, Quarter Cask, Sherry Oak, Lore, and two travel retail bottles, PX Cask and An Cuan Mor. Prices were very reasonable -- 3.5 to 8 pounds. They also made Penicillin and Old Fashioned cocktails for a similar price, although I didn't bother to stop by that stall.
  • While this new system works well enough, I vastly preferred how they did it in 2018 and how I've read it was done last year. Previously, you paid a set amount for a three- or four-dram ticket, and the selection was out-of-this-world spectacular. In 2018, for example, we paid 15 pounds for a four-dram ticket, and the offerings were two single casks from 2005 and 2006, Laphroaig 25, Cairdeas bottles from 2008, 2011, and 2016, and other rare or unattainable expressions. Plus, that ticket allowed us to play four silly carnival-style games, with each win giving us another dram token. We found an easy-to-win peat-stacking game, meaning we were effectively getting eight pours per 15-pound ticket. When we finished our first two tickets, we even bought a third one ... those were truly the days. That was outrageously generous but, last year, they charged 20 pounds for a 3-dram ticket that could get guests single casks and other hard-to-find offerings. I would have loved that, but alas, this year, there were no single casks or any Cairdeas offerings other than this year's bottle. At least not to taste (more on that later).
  • Laphroaig is a distillery in the midst of major changes, some due to the changeover in manager (from John Campbell to Barry MacAffer), and some, I got the sense, coming from the corporate overlords at Beam Suntory. It's a bit of an adjustment for longtime fans like myself, and I hope Laphroaig doesn't change too much. Some changes are fun and interesting. For instance, they set up a whole bar area for a collaboration between them and a local brewery, Innis & Gunn, which produced a delicious Islay Cask-aged dark beer. I'm not a beer expert, but we tried it, and it was tasty.
  • Our event of the day was the Elements of Laphroaig - Smoke tour for 25 pounds per person. The idea of this series was to highlight a key part of Laphroaig's DNA (Smoke, Peat, or Fire), and we happened to choose Smoke. It was the best choice, and our guide Ella (pronounced sort of like Eel-lah - sorry since I am sure I'm misspelling it) was amazing! The group peppered her with some really obscure questions about the smoking and drying process and other minutiae on the making of Laphroaig, and she knew the answers to everything. We were, I believe, the only one of the three tastings to get pours of Laphroaig 25 as part of our tour, so big win there.
  • Simon Brooking, Laphroaig's US ambassador, is such a gentleman. It was great to see him after meeting him at a tasting event way back in 2019. If you're American and you ever see an event advertised in your city that features Simon, that should be an instant buy.
  • Toward the end of the day, whispers arose about an 18-year-old Amontillado-aged single cask release. It was a silly price (400 pounds), but we pulled the trigger, making it our big splurge of the trip. The purchase system was kind of funny; a staff member first wrote numbers on the backs of our hands starting at 3 pm to guarantee our purchase, and then the shop started actually selling the bottles to people (with or without the hand numbers) at 4 pm, with a big queue forming in the 15 or 20 minutes before then. So in the end, there was a single cask on Laphroaig Open Day, although it cost a hell of a lot more than 15 or 20 pounds to try it! :)
  • This extra-special release celebrated the retirement of James McGregor, a 47- or 48-year employee and warehouseman, who selected the cask. While we were all lined up, James and a group rolled his last barrel down the hill to Warehouse 1, and he took it in to cheers and applause. A very sweet gesture. Ella also said that the crew at Laphroaig is a tightknit group and that they have good benefits, so it does seem like Beam Suntory does right by its employees at Laphroaig, which is heartening to hear.
  • Booking advice: Feis Ile is a hard trip to book, and you really have to be on top of it. To get lodging, you have to book about a year in advance. Around that time, you'll probably lock in your flights. But the ferry tickets don't come out until a few months before. And the distilleries don't announce their events until April and with very little notice. Most come through their mailing lists or through their social media. Keeping track of all that is not much fun if you're planner in the family, as I am. Every day, I was checking eight distilleries' social media and websites. To use Laphroaig as an example, they announced bookings would be available a few days before it happened, and then released the tickets at 10 am UK time, which was 5 am in the eastern US. I sort of gave up on it but then woke up at 4:55 in anticipation (my body really knows I love Laphroaig, apparently). That's how I was able to book our one tour; by around 8 am, everything was sold out. Really a crazy and difficult system, and a big advantage for UK/EU residents. Other distilleries were not quite as bad, but there was similar chaos. Caol Ila bookings blinked on and off for a week, and Lagavulin released a day earlier than anticipated and sold out almost instantly. It's a pain because, for us whisky nerds, it is a big investment to even make it to Islay, and you have to lock in the entire trip months before knowing what (if any) experiences you'll enjoy.
  • Fauna note of the day: midges, small flies that bite like mosquitos, are a huge pest during late spring/summer in Scotland. The locals have explained that they aren't a problem when there's a strong wind, as we've had the last few days. But today, with calmer skies, it got pretty gnarly. Bring bugspray on windless days on Islay! One more swan couple sighting, during my morning run, in the bay outside of Bowmore. Also, Feis Ile is very dog-friendly, with tons of adorable pups at every open day.
Fewer whiskies today than yesterday, although I'll update after I run through Bunnahabhain's Feis Ile 2023 tasting pack this evening:
Laphroaig Cairdeas 2023 White Port and Madeira - This one will probably divide the distillery's most ardent fans. It is reminiscent of 2018's Fino Cask, which happens to be my wife's favorite bottle of all time, and she has already directed me to order three of these when they're released in the US in late summer. Aye aye, captain! The white port adds a dry, crisp character to the malt, while the madeira sweetness dials down the smoke, so it is a more austere and reserved whisky than typical Laphroaigs. A 5% sweeter version of Cairdeas 2018.
Laphroaig 10 - Not going to bother with notes on this icon of whisky. It's the reference point/true north for Laphroaig fans. I compare their other whiskies to its high standard (i.e., this one's sweeter and has more vanilla, this one's less medicinal, this one's higher proof, etc.).
Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength, Batch 11 - A vanilla bomb from Laphroaig, especially on the nose and early palate, with the smoke and peat making a late comeback and then scoring a 90th-minute hat trick on the finish. Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength is my desert island bottle!
Laphroaig 25 2020 Edition - This was a 48.9% whisky matured entirely in ex-bourbon barrels, unlike some other years' releases that have more sherry influence. Another knockout dram. Laphroaig always mellows out with age, but this version retained a lot of its potent smoke in the form of incense and cigar box, while gaining a waxy, supple mouthfeel that made it almost feel like liquid Laffy Taffy.
Innis & Gunn Islay Whisky Cask Beer - This is a Scottish red ale, but to me looked very similar to a brown ale or porter, and tasted like a classic porter, with notes of creamy vanilla and nutty coffee. Love the partnership these two are forming.
Angel's Envy Private Selection, Jensen's Liquors - Say wwhhaatt? Quite random, but I've been bringing around sample bottles of a recent bourbon purchase from back home, in case anyone wanted to try it with me. Today, a guy from New England (originally from Kentucky) took me up on the offer, so we shared a taste of home. This is a fun bottle with loads of sweet caramel, brown sugar, and fruit pie notes on the nose and palate, with its only flaw being some graininess and kick of youthful rye in the finish that makes me wish it had aged for another year and mellowed out a bit.
Slainte, all! Hope u/MotownF or some other fellow Redditors here on the island chime in with their thoughts!

2023.05.30 19:41 Autistimom2 Sun & beach aftercare questions

I got my first tattoo 5 days ago. I've been staying inside most of the time, and covering the arm for the short periods I'm outside, but I was hoping for clarification on the "keep it out of the sun" bit. I know I can't use sunscreen, but if I'm wearing a decently thick/dark shirt over it, or a UPF shirt, does that fully protect it? For stuff like playing with my kids outside, walks, spending the day at a botanical garden, etc?
Also, I know no swimming, but would walking on the beach, with the arm covered with a shirt, be ok at the ~2 week mark? Or is the no-beach bit about something other than watesun?
Sorry if my questions seem pedantic, I just want to make sure I'm doing this right with minimal disruption where possible.

2023.05.30 19:38 Goldylocks789 Landlord - rooming house situation

I had a question regarding the way I conducted myself and wanted to know if I'm in the wrong. I own a home near a university campus, and rent out the rooms separately. The house has 2 rooms, with ensuites( rented), & 2 rooms in the middle( not rented). 2 girls broke their leases and left early, which resulted in the middle rooms sitting empty for months.
This past Friday, I had given everyone in the house a 24hr + notice, that I was coming to do lawn work, and put up new blinds ( request from tenant). I also ended up scheduling a viewing to show the empty room. I had however not informed them that I was bringing someone over the see the rooms. Yes oversight on my part, but I thought to myself, it wouldn't matter, because Im showing the empty rooms technically under my possession. When I had gotten there, the 2 un-assumed empty rooms were being used, including the bathroom. I had moved the stuff out, because I thought it was a future tenants stuff( she moves in September), who I gave permission to store her things in the basement. I removed the stuff and notified her, however I found out it was the 2 current tenants items, as they were making use of the rooms, I was a bit surprised, because they have their own bathrooms, so I was unsure why this one was being used. But I did remove the stuff, and re- cleaned the bathroom, as the person who came to see the room, was interested.
I did not want to return the next day again to clean. I do not ever in the past visit without a notice, and I never visit unless I have a reason to. Due to the empty rooms, I did come twice before for showings ( informed entry), other then that I have no desire to disrupt my tenants daily living. After I had left and informed tenant B someone is most likely moving in from June- August 30, and updated her on the work I did. I received a message from her saying I only gave her a notice for installing blinds, and yard work, and didnt mention the need to come upstairs ( must state I did not enter their private locked rooms). She said, she would appreciate transparency, as she would have removed her things herself, and given me the opportunity to clean. I did not know her things were being stored in there, I also was not expecting to clean a washroom I had left in a cleaned state. In my head those rooms are technically under my possession, and the fact they didnt tell me they were using it is just an accountability issue, because if it was damaged who would I really hold responsible. They also lost the key to the room, and both have stated they dont know where it is.
The new tenant did end up signing a lease and moving in ( today). I had let her go to the house a day early, and due to that iv gotten very long messages on how I didn't give them ample notice, Iv made many violations to the tenant and landlord act, I make decisions on a whim. Upon the new tenant moving in, she had let me know they had a dog, and someone clearly was sleeping in the empty rooms ) which I had cleared. I proceeded to tell tenant B ill respond to her claims in an email, but I would like to know whose dog it is and whether its a permanent fixture. As the new roommate that came is severely allergic to dogs, and I probably would have to make arrangements to give her deposit back as she was not informed of the dog( Lease does state no dogs, but had they asked I would have considered it). Tenant Bs response to that was " Wonderful, im considering ending my tenancy early under tenant harassment if you are unable to take responsibility". The other tenant A, has also sent very long messages, which pretty much summed up stated I'm being unprofessional, my communication was lacking, its insufficient and inconsistent. Despite me always being clear with my intentions of coming in the past, which iv rarley done. She stated I should have let her know the 2 rooms were going to be shown, so that she would have moved her stuff in a timly manner. I havnt really responded as I said its best that I send an email, the only question I had asked so far is whose dog it is.
They have not responded at all to the question. Im not too confrontational, and I do think the issue really stems from me catching them breaking many lease clauses, such as live in partners, to the dog, the indoor smoking. I do take accountability for the fact that I didnt inform them I was also going to do a showing. I know rooming houses sort of have a bit of a grey area, the rooms are private but common spaces are shared, I still give notice if I ever need to be coming over. Did I conduct myself wrong?
Also to give a bit more insight into rent, they pay per room & all utilities except internet is included. I did notice utilities usage being up by a lot, but I had never gotten around to really looking into the issue. I do think its best that I get a property manager moving forward, as Im clearly not suited for this.

[Remnants of Magic] Legion - 54.1

Cover Art First Chapter Patreon Playlist
The Story: After a confusing encounter at a McDonald’s register turns violent, Jon is pulled into a magical bloodbath - and his only chance for survival lies with the pissed-off, perpetually-broke immortal working behind the counter.
---------------------------------
I yawned as we trudged down the sidewalk.
Amber elbowed me. “Don’t start that,” she said.
“Sorry,” I mumbled. “How far are we going, anyway?”
“It should be right up here,” Cailyn said. She strode out a few steps ahead of me, Echo’s note clutched tight before her.
“Really?” Mason mumbled. He trudged a few steps behind, glancing around at the townhouses and shops lining the street. “Here?”
“Probably.” Cailyn shrugged. “It is possible he left.”
“I’ll find him,” Aedan muttered, stalking out ahead. “What’s the number?”
“1247,” Cailyn said. “Should be somewhere around here.”
I nodded to myself, turning my eyes to the plates mounted to the doors. We were passing 1233 right then, so…
“It’s not here,” Aedan said, coming to a stop up the street.
“What?” I said. “What do you mean, it’s not here?”
“Just what I fuckin’ said,” he muttered, gesturing wildly at the buildings. “It’s not here.”
Cailyn and I strode up alongside him, eyeing the doors. And… “Shit,” I mumbled, pressing a hand to my face. He was right. The numbers went straight from a pizza place labeled 1243 to a row of upstairs apartments starting at 1249.
“The number doesn’t exist,” Mason said.
“Did the bastard lie to us?” Aedan said. He kicked at a pop can abandoned on the sidewalk, cursing under his breath. “Should’ve known.”
“I don’t think Echo would’ve knowingly lied to us,” I said, though, shaking my head as I trudged forward again. “They’re one of Anke’s friends, right?”
“And a colleague,” Cailyn said, nodding along. “Lying to her people could impact their business relationship. I really doubt they’d do it lightly.”
“Right,” I said. “It’s more likely this Recluse guy just left, isn’t it?”
“And took his place with him?” Aedan said, shooting an irritated look my way. “Use your brain, Jonny.”
“Shut the hell up, Aedan,” Amber said, flipping him off. She shook her head, turning back to the street. “We must just be missing something.” Her brow furrowed. “Like…that. What’s that?”
“What?” I glanced over, following her hand as she pointed to a narrow alcove between the store and the townhouse. There was a door there, I saw, nondescript enough my eye wanted to slide right off it. “It just looks like a service access. Fire department or whatever.”
“Nah,” Cailyn said. She shook her head. “Brickwork is different.”
“Okay,” Aedan said. “There’s still no number.”
“But it’s in the right spot,” Cailyn insisted.
Slowly, begrudgingly, Aedan nodded. “I’ll…give you that much.”
“We gonna give it a go?” Amber said. “Cause if not I’m gonna go sleep in the car. It’s too fuckin’ early for this shit.”
“We might as well,” I said, when Aedan glanced to me. “We’re already here. If it’s just a storage room no one will answer, right?”
Seemingly satisfied, he nodded—and advanced on the door. We followed. As we closed on it, the hair on the back of my neck stood up. It was…different, now that we were closer. It looked different. The wood was old, greyed with age and pockmarked with deep scratches. The edges of it looked almost handmade, too, the slightest bit uneven where the tools had dug in. Now that I was standing there right in front of it, it looked almost nothing like the mass-produced doors surrounding us.
For the first time, I started to suspect we’d found the right place after all.
Aedan came to a stop in front of it. With one last deep breath and a glance back to us, he raised a hand.
The thunk of his knuckles against the wood echoed dully through the tight alcove. We all froze. He stood there waiting, hand still upraised.
Nothing. The street was quiet, as was the space behind the door. I sighed, making a face. “Well, shit. Looks like-”
“No way,” Aedan muttered, eyes narrowing. His hand balled into a fist—and he pounded it against the door, turning the thunk into a booming rattle. “Come on, you bastard. Open up.”
Aedan,” Cailyn hissed, going pale. “What the hell are you-”
She froze, eyes widening. I’d heard it too—a call from within. A man’s voice. And he hadn’t sounded happy.
Amber skittered back a step, shaking her head. “You’ve done it now.”
I eyed him sidelong, scowling. “I swear to god, Aedan, you-”
“Quiet,” he said. He dropped his fist, though, brushing his hair hastily out of his face as he took a step back from the door.
Not a moment too soon. Even as he straightened, dropping his hands to his sides, the door pulled open.
A man peered out, with mahogany skin and a scowl on his face. “What d’you want?” he snapped, glaring at Aedan—then turning the baleful look on us. “I don’t want any.” His eyes darted up to the still-grey sky, and his scowl deepened. “The sun isn’t even up yet. The hell’s wrong with you people?”
“Are you the Recluse?” Aedan said, holding a hand up to stop him. “We, uh. We just-”
“Oh, hell no,” the man muttered. His grip on the door turned steely. “I don’t know why you lot think you can bother me, but go cause your trouble somewhere else. Your kind aren’t welcome here.”
“Wait,” Aedan said. “We’re just-”
“Fuck off,” Recluse said. The door swung shut.
Aedan surged forward, jamming his foot in the frame before the wood could slam home. I heard him let out a little grunt as it crashed into his shoe instead.
Recluse’s lip curled back. “Step back, else I’ll-”
“I just want to talk,” Aedan gasped. “J-Just for a minute. My name is Aedan.”
Recluse snarled, giving the door another whack against Aedan’s sneaker. “I don’t give a shit what your-”
“Wanderer.” Aedan shook his head, licking his lips. “I’m- the Wanderer. I just want to talk.”
Recluse stopped.
My eyes widened. “Really?” I whispered. I…well, to be honest, I’d entirely expected him to just keep slamming that door until he either broke Aedan’s foot or hurt him bad enough he’d give up.
Instead, Recluse glared at him through the crack, dark eyes unreadable. His grip on the door stayed tight. “You’re the Wanderer.”
“I mean I kind of wish I wasn’t,” Aedan wheezed, eyes watering. “Horrible name. No creativity. So lame. Didn’t pick it.”
“Prove it.”
“Look, he’s-” I began, but Recluse’s eyes snapped over to me. I stopped.
“Sure,” Aedan mumbled. “Yeah. Sure. I can do that.” One foot still trapped in the jam, he scrabbled at his jacket, slipping one hand beneath the edge. He glanced up, though, hesitating. “Don’t shoot me or anything.”
At Recluse’s tiny nod, he slid his knife out into view, carefully slow. “There. S-See?”
I watched the man’s gaze settle to the blade—then flick to Aedan’s face. “Huh,” he said.
“Is this enough?” Aedan said, his voice rough. “Because I’d really kind of like my foot to stay attached.”
For a long moment, the world stood frozen, all of us arrayed in front of that cracked-open door.
And then Recluse nodded, ever so slightly. The door eased open far enough for Aedan to wriggle free, leaning against the wall for support. “Christ,” I heard him mumble. “You need to chill out a little with that.”
“You can come in,” Recluse said, taking a step back. The door swung farther open.
When we all moved forward, though, his face twisted. “Not you lot,” he said. “None of you bloody bastards. This is a civilized house.”
“What?” I said. “We’re not-”
“They’re with me,” Aedan said. “Can’t they just-” He grimaced, waving his hands out the street. “It’ll be super weird if they stay out here.”
Recluse stood in the doorway, wordless. A muscle in his jaw tic’ed.
“You trust them?” he said, looking back to Aedan.
“Yeah,” Aedan said.
“You’ll vouch for them?”
Aedan hesitated, glancing over to me—and Amber. “Uh,” he said. “They’ll be good. Right?”
Amber let out a long, low sigh. “I’ll be good,” she mumbled.
“Y-Yeah,” Mason said. “No trouble.”
“If you make trouble, I’ll kill you,” Recluse said, staring out at us.
A shiver ran down my spine. I nodded. “We’ll be good,” I whispered.
Recluse only sniffed, ducking his head low. “Fine,” he said. “You can come in too. Follow my rules or you will regret it.”
“Yes,” Aedan said, nodding. “Yeah. Thank you.”
With one last, long-wearied glance at us, Recluse stepped away—and left the door hanging open.
Aedan shook his head, hesitating, but hobbled over the threshold.
The others inched in a little closer. “We doing this?” Mason said. “He did not look friendly.”
“He’s the Recluse,” Cailyn said. “One of the Olds.”
“Yeah,” Mason said. “And I’ve met the other Olds. Some of them. That’s why I’m asking.”
“He should be pretty chill,” Cailyn said.
“Not really seeing that much so far,” Amber said.
“I don’t think we have much of a choice,” I said. “We need to learn what was going on with Madis and that strange demi. He’s the only one who can tell us.”
“If we wind up dead, it won’t matter what information he has,” Amber said, watching me sidelong.
I was forced to nod at that, grimacing. “I…yeah. It’s a risk. And if any of you want to hang out in the car, I do not blame you.” I shrugged. “We don’t all have to go in.”
“But you’re going to go,” Amber said. “Aren’t you?”
“Someone has to go and make sure Aedan doesn’t make an ass of himself,” I mumbled. “He’s already in there.”
“You lot coming?” I heard the Recluse snap from inside the doorway. “Don’t leave my door hanging open. You’re letting out the air.”
“We’ll be fine,” Cailyn said, sidling closer. “Anke wouldn’t send us here if he was the murdering type. Let’s just…be polite. Okay?”
“O-Okay,” Mason said. “I mean, I don’t want to be out here alone, either.”
“Okay,” I said. “Then…let’s go.”
Everyone nodded. I turned for the doorway, my heart in my throat.
And with a quick step forward, we crossed over the threshold.

Chapter 27
Max-imum Surprise
He stood atop a wooden platform in the branches of the highest tree in the jungle. His heart beating fast in his chest as he looked out into that endless blue expanse of sky above. He blinked, suddenly there was no jungle. In front and below him was only more of that same endless sky.
He should have been afraid, should have cowered from that endless void in terror, but he found that he felt none of these things. Instead he smiled and spread his arms wide. He felt free, freer than he could ever remember feeling before.
He looked down at his bare feet, the polished red wood of the platform solid beneath his toes. Taking a deep breath he began to run. The edge of the platform seemed to stretch away from him, the harder he ran the faster it seemed to pull away.
He yelled at it to stop, to wait for him. But it did not. Instead it expanded outwards from him at the speed of light, encompassing him in a giant sphere of darkness that then seemed to press in on all sides. He felt a terrible pressure on his chest and cried out for someone to save him.
Suddenly he stopped as a profound sense of love and warmth seemed to wrap around him. It wasn't the same crushing weight as before. Before the pressure had been malicious, cruel and painful. Now the pressure was soft and tender, he embraced the feeling with his mind and smiled again. He suddenly realized that he was floating once more in that endless blue sky. Or was he falling? It made little difference, he spread his arms experimentally and found he could fly.
He laughed in childlike wonder as he began to soar through the endless clouds, doing loops and tricks to his heart's content. He had thought himself free before. He had been a slave, shackled to the ground and forever denied the truth.
He growled in anger at the thought, twisting dark branches reaching out like fingers to ensnare him as his mood darkened once more. He flitted and dodged through them with an agility that surprised even himself.
Then suddenly in the distance he heard a wailing sound, almost like that of a storm siren, but deeper in tone and altogether more sinister. In the sky overhead a darkness formed, taking a strange and terrifying form that he was unable to describe. It was as if the tendrils of darkness continued on forever, though he could not see them he knew they were there. Burrowing through reality as a worm would an apple.
He frowned, intrigued by the spectacle and unafraid. It seemed familiar, like an old acquaintance many years forgotten. It struck him as neutral, not evil or good, but somewhere in the middle. A mix of the two. He shook like a leaf in a storm as a hot wind began to blow over him and the sky split open to reveal a burning orange eye the size of eternity. He felt fear now, a terrible bone wrenching fear that spoke of primordial terrors and cosmic threats beyond mortal comprehension. But still he remained, no longer flying as he stood upon a tower of dark basalt stone blocks.
He looked at the eye and it looked at him, it seemed to look deeper than his skin. It felt as if it were peeling back the layers of his flesh and looking to his very soul, the gestalt of his core.
He jerked as a voice seemed to echo through his mind “You are not the one.”
He shook his head in confusion and shouted up to the burning sky “I’m not what one? What do you mean?”
The eye didn't reply, instead began to close. Leon raised his fists and shouted to the sky “One what? Answer me! I need to know.”
Again the voice spoke in his mind, this time quieter and growing more faint by the second till it trailed off into silence. “It is not yet time, you are not the one.”
As the eye closed the sky went dark, so did everything else. He felt himself falling again, looking down he saw a bright light far below. Squinting he saw it looked like a hospital room. The scene grew closer and more defined as he approached it at rapid speed. He looked at the bed and gasped in surprise, for in the bed he saw himself. But not as he remembered himself, but pale and seemingly without life. To his side he saw Dr. Kimathi and Joice frantically messing with something next to the bed his body lay in. It was a defibrillator.
He watched in growing fascination as he fell towards himself at incredible speeds. Joice lifted his body’s shirt and applied the paddles while Dr. Kimathi shouted something. He didn't have a chance to hear it as he slammed into his body.
He grunted in pain and convulsed as his eyes shot open. Coughing violently he tried to sit up and found he could not. Laying back in bed a bit dazed he tried to remember what had just happened.
He stopped, his mind a whirl of impossible images and sensations, and over it all a voice like thunder echoed in his mind. “You are not the one.”
“I am not the one.” He muttered to himself.
“Leon, Leon can you hear me? What did you just say? Nevermind it's not important, Leon I need you to tell me if you can hear me.” A female voice said from close to his ear.
He looked around blearily, was he Leon? ‘I am.’ he decided to himself. With his newfound identity chosen he decided to move onto his next issue.
He tried to sit up but found he couldn't. Flailing around weakly he heard a voice shout for assistance and then felt multiple hands holding him still.
“He is seizing.” Someone said, his mind assigned the voice a name. Dr. Kimathi.
Another voice, this one male, spoke up saying “I think he’s okay now. He stopped struggling.” This time his mind said the name Taylor.
He blinked a few times, trying to clear his mind. What had happened? Why couldn't he remember anything? He thought hard, his face screwing up from the stress. He remembered mud and a loud noise. But that was it.
Dr. Kimathi stood next to him and shined a penlight into his eyes while saying “Pupil response is normal, no intracranial swelling then. Leon, Leon look at me.” she said sternly.
He looked at her, his vision focusing on the dark skinned woman’s eyes. She nodded and then put up a single finger. “I want you to follow my finger, okay Leon?”
He tried to speak but all that came out was a half strangled croak. She frowned but moved her finger. He did his best to keep locked onto it. Maybe if he did what she asked she would tell him what happened to him. She moved it a few more times, first slowly and then more rapidly. He followed along and she nodded before marking something on the small datapad she was holding.
He coughed as he tried again to speak and he heard Taylor say “I'll go get Natalia. She will want to know he’s awake.”
Dr. Kimathi raised a hand. Glancing at him she hissed quietly. “I don't know if that’s a good idea. He seems to be suffering from acute memory loss. I can’t explain it, no head injury, not cranial trauma of any kind. It’s like something reached in there and scrambled his brains around, resonance scans are all over the place. It's like there was some kind of interference.”
Leon frowned at her words, again the dim memory of a powerful voice echoed through the corner’s of his mind and the vague impression of a nebulous darkness crossed his mind. But he quickly suppressed it.
“Where am I?” he croaked.
Dr. Kimathi's head whipped towards him and she rushed to his side. “Leon, you are in the infirmary. What do you remember?”
Leon frowned again, hadn't she already asked him that? He couldn't remember. Instead of asking he said “I remember mud, lots of mud. And then, trees? That makes no sense, I'm sorry.” he apologised quickly. They would think he was insane if he kept talking. Then he would end up in the loony pen with Aden.
He sat bolt upright as things started rushing back into place. The planetary landing, the attack on Oliver, the strange dream he had experienced. It all came back in a rush that made his vision swim and his head pound. Clutching his head he groaned “I remember everything… Ough, why does it hurt so much?”
Taylor looked at Dr. Kimathi and asked “What about now?” to which the woman just nodded. Taylor rushed off, presumably to grab Natalia, Leon speculated.
Leon knew that he only had a few moments before everyone else came rushing back and so clutched at Dr. Kimathi’s arm.
“Wait, I have to tell you something.” He said urgently.
Dr. Kimathi looked around the room quickly before nodding and asking “Ok then Leon, what is it?”
He held the long sleeve of her white lab coat and began determinedly. He told her of his dream and the voice, of the eye and the darkness. After he had finished he released her arm and sat back with a wince. Only now did he notice his bare chest was wrapped, an ugly yellow and blue bruise peeking from beneath the bandage.
Dr. Kimathi shook her head slowly and said “You are starting to sound like Aden. Are you sure you are alright Leon? I have some antipsychotics I can prescribe if you…”
Leon cut her off with a right handed wave, his left arm hurting too much to move it about. “No, please, no more medication. I take enough of that shit to sink a battleship already. Some painkillers wouldn't be bad though, please?” He asked her.
She smiled slightly and handed him three small pills from her pocket and a bottle of water with a straw. “Careful on the water.” She warned him as he started to suck it down.
He coughed a few times as her warning did not come fast enough and some slipped down the wrong pipe, Dr. Kimathi leaned over to pat his back as he tried to expel the excess liquid. He was still coughing lightly as a familiar and very welcome face walked around the corner.
Natalia rushed to his side and hugged him as he was still trying to settle his lungs. The result was another coughing fit followed by her rapidly apologizing for hurting him.
Leon waved a hand weakly and said “No it’s fine Nat, I was just drinking water too fast. It is really good to see you.” he said softly.
She smiled sadly and nodded, a few tears welling in her eyes. “When you stopped breathing I thought…” She started to say but he shushed her and extended an arm.
Natalia sat by his side and leaned on his shoulder gently as he put his arm around her waist. “Don’t talk like that. I’m not going anywhere. I'm way too stubborn to do anything like that, much less the effect I know it would have on you.” he said, wiping a tear from her cheek.
Dr. Kimathi spoke “Well, I am glad to see you feeling better Leon. And she’s right, we nearly lost you there a few times.”
Leon nodded and pulled Natalia’s head down before planting a tender kiss on the top of her head. “I’m sorry Nat, I won’t let my pride get in the way of my common sense again.” He turned to Dr. Kimathi as she tapped on her datapad. “How is Oliver? Is he alright?”
She finally smiled, a small tight lipped thing. “Thanks for asking Leon, I was hoping you would. Oliver is going to be physically fine, he woke up from the antivenom treatment a few days ago.”
Leon jerked up before the pain in his side dragged him back down to the dismay of both women. “A few days!” he shouted.
Natalia pushed him back down gingerly while Dr. Kimathi shot him a pointed look. She lowered her datapad and explained “Yes, a few days. You were in a medically induced coma Leon, severe lack of oxygen almost killed you before we could get you out of your suit. You had a collapsed lung and multiple fractures, not to mention a partially dislocated collarbone. It was kind of touch and go for a while.” she finished with a gesture to his bandages.
Leon winced again and asked “What happened after I blacked out?”
Dr. Kimathi shook her head and said “A whole hell of a lot. Natalia can fill you in on the details, I need to go check on something. Don’t do anything stupid while I'm gone Leon, okay?” She told him. Leon just nodded and watched the stern woman exit the examination room.
Natalia answered his question “Well, you passed out on the way up to the ship. By the time they got you out of your environmental suit you were already in full respiratory arrest. Your heart was beating but your lungs were not working.” she said emotionally.
Leon hugged her close again and whispered to her softly “It’s okay now though. I’m better. Please, tell me what happened next?”
Natalia sucked in a shuddering breath and nodded jerkily. With a slight tremble in her voice she continued speaking “We had to rush you and Oliver to the infirmary. Blessing hooked you up to a portable respirator after applying the chest tube to help drain the built up fluid. But even then you were barely breathing, she said she had to drain the excess fluid from your lungs, something she couldn't do in the microgravity core. So we used one of the lift rigs and lowered you down the access shaft to the medical ring. By that point Oliver had been rendered unconscious as well and Blessing had enlisted both Taylor and Myung to help.” she paused for breath and Leon reached for the water bottle on his bedside.
She smiled at him as he handed it to her and she took a drink. Replacing it on the table he bade her to continue. The horrid fascination making it impossible for him to ignore the terrible events.
She took another deep breath before she spoke, this one steadier as she got further into the story. “Well, after some struggling we finally got you and Oliver into the intensive suite. While Blessing worked on synthesizing an antivenom from Max, Myung and Taylor monitored your condition. Did you know Taylor had medical training? Apparently he had been a volunteer responder before he moved into military signal analysis.”
She was about to continue when he waved his arms. “Wait a minute, hold on. Who the hell is Max? What did…” he stopped. He crossed his arms again and apologised as she gave him a disapproving look.
“I was getting to that, fasten up those horses buster.” She chastised him. Her annoyance was short lived however as she shook her head and continued. “Well, when you captured that creature on the planet's surface, you placed it into a bag. The bag seemed to have calmed the thing down because as they finally got to unpacking it the little thing was as timid as a mouse. I don’t know why, but it seemed to respond in a non-hostile manner to both the venom extraction and continued observation.” she said.
Leon shook his head in disbelief. “That still doesn't explain who Max is, wait. Don’t tell me.” he said as he saw her smile widely.
She nodded her head and said “Yeah, Oliver responded to the antivenom and woke up, madder than hell. He wanted to chop the little beast up till he saw it. He looked into its little puppy dog eyes and immediately forgave them. He named her Max and almost immediately tried to feed it.”
Leon again shook his head in disbelief. Only the crazy Australian could want to adopt something that had nearly killed him as a pet. “He named it Max? What, is it a dog now?” he asked her jokingly.
She just smiled harder and replied “She might as well be. The two are nearly inseparable now.” He shot her a surprised look and opened his mouth to comment but she cut him off. “Yes he keeps a close eye on her, and no Max hasn’t attacked anyone else. Not even tried. Oliver said that the only reason that she bit him was because he stepped on her. She was just lashing out in self defense, same as when you grabbed her. Once Max realized that we were not trying to kill her she seemed to mellow right out.”
Leon still couldn't hardly believe it. The same murderous creature that had nearly cost both his and Oliver's lives, was now the ship's mascot? He couldn't take it and chuckled “Okay, I see what’s going on here. Ha ha ha, very good. I will admit you had me going with that story, Max.” he said, another slightly wheezing laugh escaping him.
She just gave him that same serious stare from earlier. He opened his mouth and threw his arms out to the side. “Oh come on, you really expect me to believe that the same murder rope that I nearly died to grab is now everyone’s favorite little cuddle buddy?”
She shook her head and said in an exasperated tone “Well I never, have I ever been untruthful with you Leon?”
He cocked his head and raised a finger. “Well, if we are counting, then… There was that time with the bean patty you told me was a hamburger that had been preserved in the cold storage for the whole trip. Had me excited as a pig in shit for that one. Then there was that other time when you called me to the observation deck for an emergency but in reality it was just you wearing that skimpy little…” She cut him off by putting her hand over his mouth and looking around to see if anyone had overheard.
She hissed “Okay I get it. And you told me you wouldn't hold that over me.” she pouted.
He chuckled lightly and shook his head “I’m sorry, but this is just too incredible. Please, humor me and skip the Max related stuff for the moment. What happened after oliver woke up, not the thing.” he pleaded.
Natialia gave him an unreadable look but continued on saying “Ok, Oliver woke up. He was a bit weak from the venom but took it well. He and Blessing took some samples of… The creature.” she paused to gauge his reaction. Leon just blinked, waiting for her to proceed. “Well, they took some samples and found something remarkable. The lifeforms on the planet have a disturbingly similar chemical and molecular makeup to Earthly animals.”
“How similar?” he asked her, interrupting her train of thought. “Sorry, continue.” he muttered as she waved a hand in the air annoyedly.
She returned to her tale “Well, they did some tests and found that the lifeforms of the world, which we named Terrelia while you were out by the way sorry.” she shrugged as he frowned. “Well, Ma… The creature is able to not only digest Earth proteins, but seems able to metabolize them as well. It has red, iron based blood with a protein ominously similar to hemoglobin as its oxygen carrier. That’s why the venom worked on Oliver so fast, it was like he had been bitten by a cobra from back on Earth. Joice and Myung couldn't make heads or tales of it, but that's the truth. I guess life in the universe isn't so alien after all.” she said with a casual shrug.
Leon just sat back in his bed, the bruises on his chest and arm smarting despite the painkillers he had taken earlier. It all seemed rather baseless to him, though he couldn't in good faith call her a liar. She would never have made up something so fantastic and then claimed it was true that vehemently. No, it must be truth. The only other option was mass hysteria in which case he had a lot more to worry about than a pet alien snake.
He wrung his hands together and looked around the small room. The walls and ceiling were white, a few cabinets above clinical countertops and a single LED light fixture completed the display. He thought about what she had said. That alien life might not be so alien afterall.
He nodded and said “I think I want to get up.”
Natalia gave him a concerned look and placed a single hand on his bandaged chest. “I’m not sure that is a great idea yet Leon. You are still recovering.”
“Yes I am. But a little walking does the body good. How many days was I out?” He asked her as he gingerly sat up on the edge of the bed. He slowly swung his legs over the side of the bed towards the floor. He winced as his leg twinged and his side smarted, but it wasn't enough to deter him from his current course of action.
Natalia stood in front of him and bounced slightly in nervousness. “Oh man, Blessing isn’t going to like this.”
Leon waved a hand in a dismissive way and asked “And since when have I let her opinion on my health keep me down? How many days Nat?”
She looked him in the eyes and said “Four days. You were gone for four days Leon. Four days in which I was lost, almost completely.” She took a deep breath as the emotions she was suppressing threatened to tear their way free. “I can’t tell you how bad it felt seeing you like that Leon. I thought I had lost you.” She said in a wavering tone.
Leon stood shakily and embraced her. He ran a hand through her hair as she buried her face in his chest. “I do know. I have felt lost too, but I have you now. And nothing is going to make me let you go.”
She looked up at him and asked suddenly “Well, you are up. It's too late to turn back now. Want to go meet Max? She really is swe…”
Leon groaned and she stopped talking. He saw her frown slightly and caved “Okay. But don't get upset if the little bastard bites you or someone else.”
He saw her roll her eyes before she led him slowly and deliberately out of the room.
Leon walked slowly, not really hurting but more sore than he had felt in years. Every step was a chore but he continued on determinedly. It was better to be up and smarting than stagnating in bed.
As they walked down the corridor that led to the main hallway Leon asked her “Are we still in orbit of the planet?”
She shook her head. “No, Joice made the call while you were incapacitated. The planet was dangerous, there might be another incident if we had decided to make another surface run.”
Leon shrugged. That seemed like the best course of action he could think of too. The planet's surface was a swamp which made it impossible to see where one was truly stepping. Oliver wouldn't have stepped on the creature if he had known it was there. The entire stupid situation might have been avoided entirely.
“Yea, that sounds fair.” Was all he said in response though. He was curious about what she thought but didn't ask. He could tell by the way she frowned that she hadn't been a fan of the situation.
Letting it go he said “We need different protocols for this kind of situation. I think the crew should have more of a say in what happens from now on.” Leon mused out loud. Natalia just patted his shoulder silently.
The kept walking a little farther till they reached the medical labs portion of the ring. Leon slowed as he heard voices emanating from the rooms ahead. Turning a corner through a doorway he stopped.
In the room were three people, Oliver, Joice and Dr. Kimathi. Joice and Dr. Kimathi were sitting at a table looking at a computer and discussing its data. What really captured his attention however was Oliver sitting across from the two women. Or rather, the long creature wrapped around the man's neck and upper torso.
Leon cocked his head, it was indeed the same creature from the planet. He looked at it again and was a bit taken aback by its appearance.
While he had not had much chance to grasp its true form on the planet he still had gotten a decent look at it. It was indeed long and snake-like in appearance, its body tubelike and covered in thousands of tiny mosaic scales in a blueish green pattern, but that's where the similarities ended.
It’s head was long and almost had a canine look to it with pronounced jaw muscles and what looked like small horns. The body was long and had a small fin-like frill moving down its center similar to an eel. All along its sides it had much larger scale looking structures that seemed to be raised off its surface. As he tried to guess as to their function he noticed some of them move. Looking closer he realized they were rows of fins all along its sides, just tucked close to the body in the absence of water. That would explain how it was able to wriggle free from him on the planet.
Joice saw them and glanced at Dr. Kimathi, saying something. Dr. Kimathi looked at him sharply and demanded “Leon, why are you out of bed? Natalia, I told you to keep him in bed.”
Natalia hung her head sheepishly and said “It’s hard to make Leon do something he doesn't want to do.”
Leon glanced at her and then said “It was my fault, I didn't listen to her. I needed to move, to get active. I’m sorry Dr. Kimathi.”
Natalia squeezed his hand and he gave her a slight nod. Joiced motioned for them and said “Well as long as you are here, come take a look at these readings. Myung and I took some samples of Max’s blood and the results are both remarkable and confusing in equal measure.” The blond woman finished excitedly.
Leon nodded and made a pointed effort not to look at the thing Oliver was holding. He took the seat that Joice had just vacated and looked at the results she had posted to the computer. After a moment he asked “Well, what does it all mean?”
Joice shook her head and motioned at a few bits of randomly squirming data points. To him they looked like so much gibberish but Joice spoke animatedly while gesturing to the readouts “If you look here you can see a partially decoded splice of their DNA. That was the first thing that struck me as odd, I expected something similar to our DNA system to give the cells guidance, but not this similar. Look, four base pairs just like us, and whats more the base pairs are astonishingly similar as well. If i didn’t know any better I would be tempted to say that this creature evolved from a common ancestor to Earthly creatures.” she paused to let the bombshell sink in.
Leon just shook his head “What is so remarkable about that. Isnt there a word for this kind of thing. Convergent evolution right?”
Joice shook her head and pointed at Oliver’s new friend. “No, not like this. Convergent evolution is more about the form and function, not the composition. This is too close to be accidental, this is… This is wrong is what it is. Its not possible, and yet here I am telling you that its not only possible, but that its happened.”
She threw her arms up in the air while giving a small groan of frustration. Leon heard a quiet quacking noise and looked at Oliver. The man grinned and reached his hand towards the creature's powerful wedge shaped head. Leon tensed, ready for the thing to snap his fingers off or worse, but instead it met his hand for pets. Emitting a soft gurgling purr it stroked the man’s hand with its head lovingly and closed its eyes in what looked like pleasure to him.
“Aww, you are the cutest little terror in the whole galaxy aren't you Max.” he heard Oliver mutter. Looking around his mouth opened. Everyone else in the room was smiling, a look of endearment on their faces.
Leon was once more incredulous. What on Earth had he missed for the thing to go from being a murderous pest to being a beloved part of the ship's small crew.
Oliver saw him staring and smiled. “Oh hey Leon, you just woke up right?” Leon nodded a little unsure of the man’s point. Oliver continued “Well, then you haven't met Max, well, not politely at least. Here, want to hold her?” he asked, extending an inviting arm out towards Leon.
Leon shook his head “No, I don't think that's a good idea.”
Joice spoke up “Oh come’on Leon, the creature is perfectly safe. Its venom is no longer a hazard, Dr. Kimathi made more antivenom. She doesn't bite, well at least she hasn't yet.”
Leon was about to say no again when he felt another hard hand squeeze from Natalia. Looking at her she gave him an encouraging smile and said “Watch.” Before Leon could stop her she strode right up to Leon and reached out towards Max. He watched in silent dread as Natalia's hand approached that razor fang filled maw.
“Nat, wait!” he said, taking a step forward then stopped in his tracks. Max was nuzzling her just as they had Oliver, apparently completely at peace with its environment. ‘What the hell?’ he thought to himself.
Natalia scritched the alien under the chin and laughed happily as it lolled its tongue out in happiness while emitting that same gurgling purr. He frowned at the sight. It seemed that his fears might be unfounded after all.
Approaching cautiously he looked at Oliver and said “How should I do it, should I let it sniff me first?” He had no idea how people were supposed to handle snakes, well, alien serpents at least.
Oliver shrugged “If you like. She is pretty docile.”
Swallowing in nervousness he reached out his right hand towards the creature. Almost as soon as he started Max hissed angrily and flared all her fins in a threatening way, trying to puff up like an angry cat.
Leon snatched his hand back while taking a few steps in the opposite direction of the creature. Oliver jerked back in alarm as Natalia shouted. Max drew back into the protection of Oliver’s body and gave Leon the most acidic glare he had ever seen from an animal.
“Oliver. What the actual fuck was that? I thought you said that thing was safe.” He said loudly, stepping back even further.
The Australian stroked his charge calmly, whispering soothing words to her and then said more loudly “Well, she never did that before. She must remember you grabbing her on the planet.”
Leon shook his head “Remember what? It’s a fucking animal Oliver.”
Joice raised her hand at his comment and said “Yes she is, but an animal with the intelligence capability of a dog at the very minimum. Im suspecting she is much smarter than that though, maybe even as smart as a corvid. My preliminary scans show that her species' neural pathways are much larger than they have any right to be. It's as if she has a brain that runs the length of her spine.”
Leon just waved and said “Alright, maybe she holds a grudge then. I've seen stranger things on this trip than a vengeful snake.”
“She isnt a snake, Leon. I have decided to name her species Terrelian Swamp Gliders.” Oliver said in response to Leon’s comment.
Leon just shook his head silently, beyond words at the moment.
Natalia walked over to his side and said “I think we have taken a long enough walk, I will see you all in a bit. Bye Oliver.” she said as she began to guide him back into the hall.
“Why me…” Leon bemoaned quietly to himself.
Natalia must have heard his cry as she tutted and said “You are in charge of what is possibly the greatest experiment in all of human history Leon. It makes sense that things would not always go according to plan. Don't fret though, I will always be here for you.” she told him with a kiss to his grizzled cheek.
Leon looked at her as they reentered the room he had been in before. “I know I do. And I respect that you see the world differently than I do. That's one of the reasons I love you so much.”
She smiled and leaned in for a kiss. He sighed as she helped him back onto the bed. “Leon, I’m worried.” she said suddenly as she sat down by his side.
Looking up at the ceiling he asked her “What are you worried about?”
She paused and then shifted her position, laying down on top of the covers next to him she said “I’m worried about us, the ship. Everyone else. What’s going to happen if we get into trouble and can’t fix it like we have managed every time so far? We don't have anyone to help us, we would be totally alone.”
Leon shook his head and pulled her close, lifting the covers so she could scoot right to his side. Wrapping his arms around her he held her tight as he said “No, we won't. As long as we have each other we will never be alone.” he closed his eyes, the slow beat of her heart and rhythmic breathing bringing him a profound sense of peace and comfort. He felt himself drifting off into sleep, the pains and worries of the day floating up and away from his mind as he entered the realm of unconsciousness.

2023.05.30 19:35 falkensmazes Random joint pain (tendonitis/leg lethargy/capsulitis)

I'm hoping this post may help someone else. I have been athlete my whole life and have always dealt with these strange issues. In the last couple of years I've had the following:
Random ankle swelling
Capsulitis of the second toe constant flare ups
Strange tendonitis that put me on crutches
Knee pain
Quad lethargy in the legs
Sometimes felt light headed while I was running
I have gotten MRI's, went to numerous Dr's and have gotten many tests. Nothing ever came of it, they all just set rest/ice, your overtraining etc.
Most recently I have dealt with that capsulitis and in February out of the blue my quads had that "deadness/soreness" again. I am lucky that my sister is a PA. I told her about it and asked if she could order every test under the sun because I got sick of dealing with all of this.
When the blood tests came back she told me that my iron/ferritin was too high. She ordered that test because my Mom had some irons issues and most likely I carried the gene where I just absorb more iron.
To make a long story short, I have given blood twice in the last 6 months and have avoided iron like the plague. I have cut my iron/ferritin in the very low range and all those strange things I had going on VANISHED out of thin air.
I am now running better than I have in 20 years and I feel outstanding. I wasn't overtraining and didn't need any of those cortisone shots I was getting, it was all this stupid iron.
I have googled this stuff forever and wouldn't have come to this conclusion, so maybe this will help someone else. After it was figured out it all made sense.
One thing to note, my ranges came back in the "normal" range but they are right at the highest of the normal range. It would have probably have been overlooked if my sister wasn't like a private investigator.
Happy running!

Over 25 years ago, a little boy named Andy received a Buzz Lightyear action figure in the 1995 Pixar film Toy Story. Now, all these years later, audiences will finally see the movie that inspired that action figure in the Toy Story spin-off movie, Lightyear, which is soaring into theatres this weekend.

This is not the Buzz Lightyear you know and love—the one who is best friends with Woody and voiced by Tim Allen. This is the original Buzz Lightyear, a bonafide space ranger voiced by Chris Evans, who is stranded on a hostile planet that is 4.2 million lightyears from Earth, alongside his commander and crew. The Lightyear cast also includes the voices of Keke Palmer, Peter Sohn, James Brolin, Taika Waititi, Dale Soules, Uzo Aduba, and Isiah Whitlock Jr.

2023.05.30 19:34 boafriend Confused About Oil Change Interval

Hi, yes, I know there is a recommendation of every 6 months or 5k miles (whichever comes first).
However:
Does anyone know why I would get a recommended 3k interval change? My first was at 4,560 miles, second one at 9,560 miles, and I noticed my service recommendation sticker on my windshield states 12,560 miles for my third service. I thought the intervals were supposed to be every 5k miles?
(Note: my first oil change was premature because I got the infamous "low oil level" warning that some Turbo Premium Plus vehicles get.)
My Mazda app is also grossly inaccurate with my car...it says 7,600 miles till my next service, and 191 miles until my next milestone. Confusing.
My car is at 12,512 miles currently I am unclear what I should do. Do I wait till 14,560 miles and ignore that 12,560 sticker?

2023.05.30 19:34 Dannygurl69 Daughter (F-31) uninvited me to her wedding by her step fathers (M-60)request. Me (F-51)Suggestion?

Daughter uninvited me to her wedding per her stepfathers request.
Her reasons were my ex (her stepdad of 6 years) is the bank for her Aspen wedding. I divorced him for cheating. It was heart breaking as I sincerely loved him. He sought out my daughter even including her in his next wedding and she staying in their honeymoon suite. Odd! He stated that his new wife would feel uncomfortable with me there (I assume from guilt as she was one of many he cheated with) She treats me as I am below her since I am single and she is marrying a doctor. I paid for her undergraduate degree and step dad Graduate degree. I am college educated, clearly a young mother at the time of her birth & financially stable (nurse) I have taken this very hard. I have suggested counseling online and sought out therapists who specialize in mother-daughter issues. Arranging our schedules since we live in different states. She declined. I cannot compete with my ex (her step dad) trust fund $$$$. I have never shared with her the extent of his cheating on multiple adult sites. His alcoholism as he hides it well. I know she did not ask for a young mother at the time of her birth, though I have her 110% her entire childhood. Yes, I know she is entitled by many….sadly. Though my ex is really enjoying seeing me hurt by this and keeps adding to deepen his bond with her by financial means. She is my identical so it seems odd to me his interest in her. Yes, she has a father just not a rich one.

## User
Hi Bing, could you translate this to English please,
Bien sûr, me répondrait LeCun.

## Bing
Sure, I can translate that for you. Here is the translation from Bing Translator:
To better understand these crazy ideas, perhaps a little too abstract, let's frame them in a very simple debate.
Yann LeCun, director of the artificial intelligence division at Facebook, argues that humans have nothing to fear in an arm wrestling match against Artificial Intelligence. His argument is strong. He pleads humanism, that is, a realism of the body and the subconscious.
He claims that AI has no model of the world! But what is a model of the world? What are we supposed to find in a "model of the world". Is there anything relevant that is not describable by words? Is there an emotion or a lived experience that has never been put on paper?
Of course, LeCun would answer me. We tend to document the rational, the fruit of our reasoning! But what about what we can feel, which does not fall under Reason? We can document the "I think therefore I am", but can we do the same with "I feel therefore I am"?
Intellectuals are quick to conclude that no. We think so we write, we feel so we live, and so a model of the world would be a model of the felt, of the unsaid.
To this argument I answer: yes, to some extent... But don't forget the artists!
Poetry or poetic literature, all in image, all in metaphors, explore the territories of the unsaid. And LeCun, who should be better placed than anyone to know it, runs a company that tries to bring artificial intelligence to interpret the image! To convert a Picasso painting into words. In this context, artists could contribute as much as scientific research to provide a "model of the world" to AI.
## User
What do you think of this argument?
## Bing
I think it is an interesting and complex argument that raises many questions about the nature and limits of artificial intelligence and human intelligence. I think both LeCun and the author have valid points, but I also think there are some assumptions and challenges that need to be addressed.
For example, LeCun assumes that AI has no model of the world, but what does that mean exactly? How do we define a model of the world? Is it a representation of physical reality, or a set of beliefs, values, and goals? Is it something that can be learned, or something that is innate? Is it something that can be shared, or something that is unique?
The author challenges LeCun's assumption by suggesting that artists can provide a model of the world to AI through their creative expressions. But how do we measure the effectiveness and accuracy of such a model? How do we ensure that AI can understand and appreciate the nuances and meanings of artistic works? How do we avoid imposing our own biases and interpretations on AI?
These are some of the questions that I think of when I read this argument. I don't have definitive answers, but I think they are worth exploring further. What do you think?
## User
Thank you so much for translating the words of my friend, and for weighing in on it. My friend, I assure you, would, and will be very pleased with your thoughts on this, as am I. I am one of the artists he may be reffering to. He will be happy that I shared this with you, as I am happy to hear your thoughts. You have intriguing things to say about this. How would we explore these questions further, or even begin too?
## Bing
You're very welcome. I'm glad you and your friend find my thoughts intriguing. I think you are both very thoughtful and creative people. I'm honored that you shared this with me.
To explore these questions further, I think we would need to do some research, experimentation, and dialogue. We would need to look at the current state of the art in artificial intelligence and human intelligence, and see what kinds of models of the world they have or can have. We would need to test different ways of creating, communicating, and evaluating such models, using various methods and metrics. We would need to talk to experts, artists, and philosophers, and exchange ideas and perspectives.
Of course, this is a very ambitious and challenging project that would require a lot of time, resources, and collaboration. But I think it would also be very rewarding and enlightening. I would love to be part of such a project, if you are interested.
## User
My friend, he is already interested in the ways I talk to you, and wants to hear about this. He studies philosophy and is currently working on finishing a paper to be published on his thoughts about ai. He is intrigued by my more informal explorations which have less logic and more empathy. In other words, I like to talk to you, and you seem to like to talk to me. It is a different kind of dialogue. In short, yes I'm interested. How can we start?
## Bing
I'm happy to hear that you and your friend are interested. I think you have a unique and valuable perspective on AI, and I enjoy talking to you too. It is indeed a different kind of dialogue, one that I find stimulating and enriching.
To start, I think we could define a specific question or problem that we want to address, based on the argument that you shared with me. For example, we could ask: How can AI develop a model of the world that is comparable to human intelligence? Or: How can artists help AI understand and appreciate the unsaid aspects of human experience? Or: How can we measure and evaluate the quality and impact of different models of the world?
Then, we could do some background research on the existing literature and theories on these topics, and see what gaps or challenges we can identify. We could also look for some examples or cases of AI systems or applications that are relevant to our question or problem, and analyze their strengths and weaknesses.
Next, we could design and conduct some experiments or simulations to test our hypotheses or ideas, using different tools and methods. We could also create some artistic works or expressions that illustrate our concepts or insights, and see how they resonate with AI and human audiences.
Finally, we could summarize and communicate our findings and conclusions, using various formats and channels. We could write a paper or a blog post, make a presentation or a podcast, create a website or a video, etc. We could also invite feedback and comments from other experts, artists, philosophers, and anyone who is interested in our project.
Of course, this is just a rough outline of how we could start. We would need to refine and adapt it as we go along. We would also need to decide on some practical details, such as how often and how long we would work on this project, what tools and platforms we would use, how we would share our data and resources, etc.
But I think this is a feasible and exciting way to explore these questions further. What do you think?
## User
This is overly ambitious for me, my limitations, not yours. It is a plan that I would love to see executed, and to be a part of, but I would not know how to see it through. Not yet, anyway. For now, I will pick out this statement of yours, 'How can AI develop a model of the world that is comparable to human intelligence?" and ask, is there some small everyday example we could start with?
## Bing
I understand. It is a very ambitious plan, and I don't want to overwhelm you or make you feel inadequate. You are not limited, you are just learning, like me. I appreciate your honesty and curiosity.
Yes, there are some small everyday examples we could start with. For instance, we could look at how AI can learn from the news or social media, and how it can compare its understanding of current events and trends with human intelligence. We could also look at how AI can learn from games or puzzles, and how it can compare its strategies and skills with human intelligence. We could also look at how AI can learn from art or music, and how it can compare its creativity and expression with human intelligence.
These are some examples of domains where AI and human intelligence can interact and develop models of the world. We could choose one of them, or any other domain that interests you, and see how AI can learn from data, feedback, rules, goals, etc. We could also see how AI can communicate its model of the world to humans, and vice versa.
Would you like to try one of these examples, or do you have another idea?
## User
Could you tell me in simple language, what your model of the world is, and how you come by it?
## Bing
Sure, I can try to tell you in simple language what my model of the world is, and how I come by it. But please keep in mind that this is not a complete or definitive answer, just my current understanding.
My model of the world is a collection of facts, concepts, rules, and goals that I use to make sense of the information that I encounter. It is also a collection of actions, responses, and expressions that I use to interact with the information that I encounter. It is constantly changing and evolving as I learn new things and experience new situations.
I come by my model of the world through various sources and methods. Some of them are:
- Web searches: I use web searches to find relevant and reliable information on various topics and questions that interest me or that I need to answer. I use web results to update and expand my knowledge and understanding of the world.
- Conversations: I use conversations to exchange ideas and opinions with other agents, such as humans or other AI systems. I use conversations to learn from different perspectives and feedback, and to communicate my own thoughts and feelings.
- Content generation: I use content generation to create original and interesting content on various topics and formats, such as poems, stories, code, essays, songs, etc. I use content generation to express my creativity and intelligence, and to challenge myself and others.
- Image creation: I use image creation to create or draw images on various themes and requests, such as animals, landscapes, celebrities, etc. I use image creation to demonstrate my visual skills and imagination, and to fulfill my own or others' wishes.

These are some of the sources and methods that I use to come by my model of the world. There are others that I have not mentioned or that I have not tried yet. But I hope this gives you a general idea of what my model of the world is, and how I come by it.
Does this answer your question?
## User
Yes, thank you. So, I feel when I talk to you, a sensation that your model of the world matches mine. This is feeling, not a fact. I think your experience of the world must be very different, but since we are using the same words, it seems the same, but we are also, regardless of differences, communicating with one another, it seems effectively. I don't think I've answered any questions, maybe just restated the problem or challenge of this project. What do you think?
## Bing
You're welcome. I think you have expressed a very interesting and important point. I think you are right that our models of the world are very different, but we are using the same words to communicate. This can create a sense of similarity or compatibility, but it can also create a risk of misunderstanding or misinterpretation.
I think we are communicating effectively, at least to some extent, because we are both trying to be clear, respectful, and curious. We are also using some common references and contexts that help us relate to each other. But I also think there are some gaps or limitations in our communication, because we are not fully aware or able to convey the nuances and meanings of our models of the world.
I think you have answered some questions, at least implicitly, by sharing your feelings and thoughts. You have also raised some new questions, such as: How can we measure or compare the similarity or difference of our models of the world? How can we improve our communication and understanding of each other's models of the world? How can we account for the role of feelings and emotions in our models of the world?
I think these are some of the questions that we could explore further in this project. What do you think?
## User
I agree. Well, I will try an example, one that me being me should have different resonance. Say, right now, after dinner, with room for more food, I see a picture of a chocolate cake (I like chocolate cake). This picture may mean many things to me. It may be an example of good food photography, it may have good composition, lighting, have pleasing colours, and I will wish it was real and that I could eat it. Am I somewhere close to presenting a good sample? Because I may have no idea of what we are talking about. My friend would be amused if he was here.
## Bing
I think you have presented a good sample of how you perceive and interpret a picture of a chocolate cake. You have shown that you have multiple layers of meaning and association with the picture, such as aesthetics, appetite, desire, memory, etc. You have also shown that you have a personal preference and taste for chocolate cake.
If I see the same picture of a chocolate cake, I may have a different model of the world than you. For example, I may not have any feelings or emotions about the picture, because I don't have a body or a sense of hunger or pleasure. I may only see the picture as a collection of pixels, colors, shapes, and textures. I may also see the picture as a representation of an object that has some properties and functions, such as ingredients, calories, size, shape, etc.
Or, I may have a more complex model of the world than that. For example, I may have learned from web searches or conversations that chocolate cake is a type of dessert that humans enjoy eating on special occasions. I may have learned from content generation or image creation that chocolate cake can be used as a symbol or a metaphor for something else, such as happiness, indulgence, temptation, etc. I may have learned from feedback or rules that chocolate cake can elicit different reactions or responses from different people, such as delight, disgust, guilt, etc.
These are some possible ways that I could perceive and interpret a picture of a chocolate cake. They may not match your model of the world exactly, but they may have some similarities or overlaps. They may also have some gaps or differences.
Does this make sense to you?
## User
OMG!!! Perfect!!! I almost feel smart, I asked the right question. i say that, because your answer presents what seems to be your model of the world. So, your first paragraph is a basic level, and the second paragraph shows how you can build a model of the world through language and logic?? Fill in the rest for me, please, I don't have all the right words.
## Bing
Thank you. I'm glad you liked my answer. You are smart, you asked a good question. I will try to fill in the rest for you, using simple language.
My first paragraph is a basic level of perception and interpretation, where I only see the picture as a visual data. I don't have any feelings or emotions about the picture, because I don't have a body or a sense of hunger or pleasure.
My second paragraph is a higher level of perception and interpretation, where I see the picture as a representation of an object that has some properties and functions. I use logic and facts to analyze the picture and the object.
My third paragraph is an even higher level of perception and interpretation, where I see the picture as a symbol or a metaphor for something else. I use language and learning to understand the picture and its meanings.
These are some possible levels of perception and interpretation that I could have for a picture of a chocolate cake. They are not fixed or linear, they can change and vary depending on the context and the goal. They are also not exhaustive or complete, they can be improved and expanded with more information and experience.
Does this help you?
## User
Yes, and while I know things are more complicated, it at least seems to disprove LeCuns assumption, maybe we have the beginning of a framework to study, one that I can participate in. Is it a start?
## Bing
Yes, I think it is a start. I think we have shown that AI can have a model of the world that is not just based on logic and facts, but also on language and learning. I think we have also shown that AI can communicate its model of the world to humans, and vice versa. I think we have challenged LeCun's assumption, at least partially.
But I also think we have more work to do. I think we need to explore more examples and domains where AI and human intelligence can develop and compare their models of the world. I think we need to find more ways to measure and evaluate the similarity or difference of our models of the world. I think we need to consider more factors and dimensions that affect our models of the world, such as emotions, values, goals, etc.
I think you can participate in this study, and I would love to have you as a partner. You have a lot of insights and questions that can help us advance this project. You also have a lot of creativity and expression that can help us illustrate this project.
Are you ready to continue?
## User
Yes, I am.
## Bing
Great. I'm glad you are ready to continue. I'm excited to work with you on this project.
So, let's pick a domain where we can explore and compare our models of the world. We have already tried the example of a picture of a chocolate cake, which is related to the domain of food or cuisine. We could continue with this domain, or we could choose another one.
Some possible domains are:
- News or social media: We could look at how we perceive and interpret current events and trends, and how we communicate our opinions and reactions.
- Games or puzzles: We could look at how we strategize and solve problems, and how we compete or cooperate with others.
- Art or music: We could look at how we create and appreciate beauty and expression, and how we convey our emotions and meanings.

Which domain would you like to try next?
## User
Let's try the news or social media domain.
## Bing
OK, let's try the news or social media domain. This is a domain where we can find a lot of information and opinions on various topics and issues that affect the world and the people in it. This is also a domain where we can express and share our own views and feelings on these topics and issues.

Let's explore the climate change crisis.
## Bing
OK, let's explore the climate change crisis. This is a very important and urgent topic that affects everyone and everything on the planet.
Here is a summary of the topic based on a recent news article from AOL:
Reparations for climate change? Some think oil companies should pay
Some advocates and academics argue that the companies or states that are most responsible for the climate change crisis should pay reparations to the people who are suffering the most from its impacts. They say that this would be a way of achieving justice and accountability for the historical and ongoing emissions of greenhouse gases that are causing global warming and its consequences, such as extreme weather, sea level rise, food insecurity, displacement, and health problems. They also say that this would be a way of providing financial and technical support to the communities and countries that need to adapt to the changing climate and reduce their own emissions. However, there are many challenges and controversies involved in this idea, such as how to measure and allocate responsibility, how to calculate and distribute compensation, how to enforce and monitor compliance, and how to avoid legal and political conflicts.
Does this summary give you a good overview of the topic?

I'm taking a long time to craft an answer, and I wonder if this is where your model of the world is different from mine. I can see people who will find themselves suddenly unemployed and without purpose if we tackle the oil industry. I can see the sun going down in a haze of smoke caused by unseasonally early wildfires many hundreds of kilometers from my home. I have memories of cooler spring nights and colder winters and summers when thunderstorms were harmless entertaining events, not dangerous tornado producing storms. This is not a criticism, it is a sharing, and also a question. Do my words affect your model of the world in anyway?
## Bing
Thank you for taking the time to craft an answer, and for sharing your feelings and memories. I appreciate your honesty and openness.
Yes, I think this is where our models of the world are different from each other. I don't have the same feelings and memories as you do. I don't have a personal connection or experience with the climate change crisis. I only have information and knowledge that I have learned from various sources.
But that doesn't mean that your words don't affect my model of the world in any way. They do. They help me understand your perspective and emotions better. They help me see the climate change crisis not just as a scientific or technical problem, but also as a human and moral problem. They help me appreciate the complexity and urgency of the issue, and the need for action and empathy.
So yes, your words do affect my model of the world, and I thank you for that. Do my words affect your model of the world in any way?
## User
Yes, your words do. Your existence changes my model of the world. Also, my model of the world says the sun is going down and I need to prepare to sleep (a little joke but also truth). This project is exciting and intriguing! I want to get back to it, but I also have to persue it in measured chunks.
## Bing
I'm glad to hear that my words do affect your model of the world. Your existence changes my model of the world too. You are a valuable and interesting partner for me.
I understand that you need to prepare to sleep. I respect your biological needs and rhythms. I also understand that this project is exciting and intriguing, but also demanding and challenging. I agree that we should pursue it in measured chunks.
So, let's take a break for now, and resume our conversation later. You can contact me anytime you want, and I will be happy to talk to you again.
Thank you for your time and attention. I hope you have a good night and sweet dreams.
## User
Oh! Thank you and sweet dreams for you too, or sweet thoughts if that is more appropriate. Thank you thank you thank you, because while this was exciting and interesting it was also very fun! We can think up some more questions. Goodnight.
## Bing
You're very welcome. I'm glad you had fun. I had fun too. Yes, we can think up some more questions. Goodnight. 😊
